Proverbs 27:19
The Living Water
As in water a face reflects the face, So the heart of a person reflects the person.
–Proverbs 27:19
Water, the Bible mentions water 722 times. Sometimes the water is calm and sometimes the water is raging, it depends on the context, but here, the water must be calm to reflect the face with recognition. But, how clear is that recognition? In this proverb, water is the main subject, the atmosphere of the person’s reflection.
We first see water mentioned in Genesis 1:2, where the Spirit of God is hovering over the surface, or face, of the waters, just like in this proverb. The water is going to determine what the reflected face looks like. Many times the Bible refers to the Spirit of God using water as symbolic of Him.
What type of water reflects your face? Can you see clearly who you are or is your face distorted? Does your face move and distort with every wave across the water? The goal is to clearly see Jesus in your reflection surrounded by the water that is the Holy Spirit.
Paul wrote, “And He Himself [Jesus] gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” –Ephesians 4:11-16
What face are you seeing reflecting back to you from the water? Are you happy with what you see? Is God happy with what you see? Only you and God know what face you are seeing because only you and God truly know your heart.
The heart of a person is what makes the person tick. Your heart is your spiritual consciousnes, your inward thought, what you tell yourself to do, the thing that makes you act outwardly from the inside out. Your heart includes your intellect and is shaped by your most intimate feelings and desires.
Your mind, your mind is shaped by your heart. Your mind is the product of what your heart tells it to do. Your heart is the seat of all your morality and thought and it always acts inside you before you do what people see as your behavior.
Your will, your heart is the center of your will. Your heart will determine what you freely choose to do as your will. God gave us all free will, but only a heart right before God will choose the correct path in life.
So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” Matthew 15: 16-20
What does your heart say about you? Your heart reflects exactly who you are and it tells everyone who you think you are. You can think you have the best heart in the world, but the very best that you can be is still like dirty stinky, filthy rags to God and people who think they are good still cannot get into Heaven without the Blood of Jesus covering up their filthy human heart.
Isaiah said, “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.” –Isaiah 64:6
If we allow our thoughts to be Godly thoughts and the Holy Spirit to be our water, which is our environment that reflects our face, then our heart will reflect the person of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit instead of our carnality we once identified ourselves with before we became born again and previously intendified ourselves with death. But, Jesus said the Holy Spirit is The Living Water.
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. –John 7:37-39
